Ready Set GC: A Year of Growth and Gratitude – Closing 2024 in Atlanta

It is hard to believe the year is almost over!

As we prepare for our final Ready Set GC event of 2024 in Atlanta, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the incredible community we’ve built together. This year, we connected with more than 100 General Counsels through our programs, and we’re thrilled to continue expanding in 2025, including launching our first program for aspiring GCs.

We owe special thanks to the women who generously volunteered their time at our programs across the country—from New York to Palo Alto, and in between in Chicago—culminating in our upcoming event in Atlanta. These exceptional leaders include Nykia Wright, Victoria Dolan, Cari Robinson, Dana Rosen, Hazel Ann Mayers, Jaci Lee, Jan Kang, Julie Gruber, Holly Amaya, Jill Jaworski, Kathy Zhu, Maxine Winer, Ryndy Ditmars, Katen Leetzow, Shannon Nash, Anna Avalos, Rose Hartwig, and Jen Campe. Joining us in Atlanta will be Elizabeth Chandler, Jennifer Ervin, Joia Johnson, Katie Kirkpatrick, and Hala Moddelmog, DeRetta Rhodes, Melissa Rasmussen, Scott Askins, and Lisa Borders.

Key Takeaways: Throughout this year, we’ve shared insights, experiences, and lessons from both our panelists and attendees. These discussions have provided invaluable guidance for navigating the complexities of the GC role. Here are a few salient takeaways from our 2024 programs:

  • You’re not alone: Many GCs are facing the same challenges as you.

  • Asking for help is a superpower: It’s a sign of strength, not weakness.

  • Financial insight is crucial: Understand the financial indicators your CEO cares about, and track them too.

  • Be a business enabler: Bridge the gap between strategic priorities, risk, and legal to get things done.

  • Message your value: Make sure your contributions—and those of your team—are visible and understood across the organization.

  • The GC role is pivotal: Know how to leverage your influence for good—this is one of the most critical roles in any organization.

  • Authenticity matters: Define success on your terms and always be true to yourself.

Success in the GC role is a continuous learning process—one that requires ongoing growth, reflection, and adaptation. To support this journey, we’ve curated a list of valuable resources. Keep reading, keep growing, and continue honing your skills as a leader.

Some key resources we frequently turn to include:

  • The Legal Department Podcast: Hosted by Stacy Bratcher and essential for GCs looking to stay on top of key issues.

  • Dimitri Mastrocola’s LinkedIn Posts: Offers insightful advice on GC leadership and strategy.

  • Sterling Miller’s “Ten Things” Blog: Practical tips for managing a legal department.

  • Laura Frederick’s “How to Contract”: A go-to resource for practical contract negotiation tips.

  • Bjarne Tellman’s Building an Outstanding Legal Team: Guidance for leaders in legal departments of all sizes.

Finally, we are deeply appreciative of the ongoing support from our partners, including Skadden, Epstein Becker & Green, Baker McKenzie, and, as always - Alston & Bird. as well as the amazing women who championed our program, your collaboration has been instrumental in helping us empower more women leaders throughout 2024. Amy Van Gelder, Emily Reitmeier Haffner, Fran Green, Susan Sholinsky, Shira Blank, Aarthi Belani and Cara Peterman.

As we wrap up 2024 and look ahead to the new opportunities in 2025, we remain deeply grateful for the unwavering support of this community. It’s your commitment, collaboration, and shared wisdom that continue to inspire and shape Ready Set GC. We hope to see you in Atlanta and look forward to learning, growing, and connecting with all of you in the year ahead.
